Last night I stepped out into the back yard and the sky stopped me where I stood.

The clouds were magnificent. Pink, orange, gray, and blue all piled up together while the sun went down behind them. Three birds were lined up on the power line, little dark shapes against all that color, not moving, just taking it in the same as me.

Then I noticed something odd hanging under the clouds. A soft streak of rainbow color, hanging straight down from the clouds.

Which confused me, because it wasn’t raining. Not a drop.

One possibility is something called virga: rain that falls out of a cloud and dries up before it hits the ground. So it was raining up there after all. It just never made it down to me.

I like that. Rain that never landed, catching the last of the light on its way to nothing.

I’m glad I looked up.
