The Long Road Here
I've been blogging since 2004 — back when everyone was doing it and we all thought it would last forever. This is the full history, in real time, warts and hiatuses and all. Want to know more about the person behind all these platforms? Read the About page →
2004
First post April 27, 2004 — right in the golden age of blogging. Wrote steadily here until October 2006, when WordPress was in full swing and Blogger took a backseat. A lot of the images are gone since I dropped the photo hosting service, but all the words are still there.
2006
— there may have been some activity in 2005 during the Blogger import, but this is when it got real. Ran both platforms at the same time for a while, some posts original to WordPress, some crossed over from Blogger. Went quiet around 2007 and returned to Blogger exclusively.
2007
Came back to Blogger in March 2007 after the WordPress run wound down. This was the final and longest stretch — posting here exclusively until the last entry on May 18, 2012, then stopped blogging altogether.
2021
Back after nearly a decade away. Rebranded as Toby Geeks Out! and wrote actively through December 2022 — this is when the blog finally got the name it still carries.
2022
Tested Micro.blog briefly while still wrapping up on WordPress. Interesting platform, but the timing wasn't right. Didn't stick.
Started the same month as Medium. Ran through August 2023, then paused.
Started the same month as Postcard. Ran through June 2023, then went quiet.
2023
Started strong in February 2023 and wrote actively through August. Then life hit hard — a layoff, then a close friend's stroke that had me traveling back and forth between Kentucky and New Mexico for months. Writing took a backseat.
Started alongside Substack as a newsletter experiment. Kept running even through the Substack gaps. Did its job. Last post January 2026.
2024
Managed exactly one post — a full year after going quiet. Still wasn't ready to come back properly.
2025
Came back properly in February 2025 and wrote through March 2026. Fading now since Micro.blog has taken over as home base.
Came back in December 2025 with a handful of posts through February 2026. Running alongside Micro.blog but probably not going anywhere from here.
2026
Came back briefly in January 2026, mostly crossposting from Micro.blog. Quietly fading.
A Notion-powered experiment running briefly alongside Micro.blog. The idea was solid but the $40/month price tag wasn't. Ended March 2026.
Came back properly in 2025 and built a custom Hugo theme from scratch. Everything else was just noise. This is home base — micros, long-reads, watch logs, a newsletter, the whole thing. This is the one.
