Kuwohi stands at 6,643 feet — the highest point in Tennessee, North Carolina, and all 2,144 miles of the Appalachian Trail. A sacred Cherokee site, its name means "mulberry place," where medicine people once prayed and sought guidance from the Creator. In 2024, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names restored its original Cherokee name after decades as Clingmans Dome. From the observation tower, you can see up to 100 miles across seven states. The Cherokee called these mountains Shaconage — "place of the blue smoke" — the mist that gives the Smokies their name.
