Geeksouts — Page 16

A yellow front door with the number 37 is set within a white archway, surrounded by green tiles and a potted plant
The front door, oil painted with, an age0-old, durable, permeable choice made from flax seed.

I love browsing house doors; I used to photograph them in DC. This door with a central knob and stunning color inspires me. I plan to paint my door yellow but struggle to choose the right shade. Link

Though I still have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and use it occasionally, I mainly rely on my Android phone daily. I generally prefer Android over iOS, but to fully enjoy Android’s benefits, high-end phones are often the best.

I saw The Devil Wears Prada years ago, but with a sequel on the way, I was curious if it’s based on a true story. While technically fiction, it’s a thinly veiled look at Lauren Weisberger’s tenure at Vogue. Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly is the cinematic ghost of Anna Wintour—right down to the high-fashion armor.

As Streep noted regarding the character’s relentless drive:

“I wanted to take on the burden of being the one who has to make everything ‘perfect’ and the price that woman pays for that.”

Legendary satire.

For fun, I check my horoscope once in a while… I am a Virgo. Here it goes:

Virgo

  • Your Card: The Star
  • Your Word: Self-Love

You’re on top of the world this year, Virgo, and it’s time to let your light shine! You’re used to being the one in the background, doing all the hard work behind the scenes to make everyone else happy. This year, you’re ready to step into the spotlight and take care of yourself first for once. Remember that self-care is not selfish, and learning to love yourself is one of the most important lessons in life.

TIL about Nowruz, the Persian New Year, celebrated for over 3,000 years. Every spring equinox, families set a “haft-sin” table: seven items starting with “S,” each symbolic. Sprouts for renewal. Apples for beauty. Garlic for protection. Sumac for light over darkness. Vinegar for wisdom. Wheat pudding for abundance. Dried oleaster for love.

Designer Nicole Najafi describes it as “a tangible link to the past.” Remodelista

On day 13, you tie the sprouts in a knot, make a wish, and throw them into running water. Beautifully weird. Beautifully human.

Cozy, rustic room features wooden ceilings, a wicker chair with a fur throw, a table with a large vase of flowers, and abundant natural light from windows with bamboo blinds.
Painted floors transform the indoor porch of a 1920s Minneapolis Craftsman by designer Anne McDonald

That star chandelier against the wood ceiling. The way the light filters through bamboo shades onto a sage floor. I could disappear into that room with a book and not come back for hours.

EVs chew through tires faster than gas cars — heavy batteries and instant torque put extra stress on every acceleration. A former Michelin executive put a number on it:

“EVs tend to wear out their tires up to 20% faster than standard gas vehicles.”

Many EV tires are designed for low rolling resistance — harder tread compounds, shallower depth. Less tread from the start equals a shorter lifespan.

I passed my permit test, and I’ve been going back and forth between an EV, a hybrid, or a gas car for my first car. Good to know what I’d actually be signing up for.

A bright and airy tiny home interior features a kitchenette with blue cabinets, a small dining area, and large windows offering scenic mountain views.

If I ever redid my tiny house, I’d steal this window layout. Different sizes, all that light flooding in — no overhead fixture competes. Shiplap on walls and ceiling? Brilliant. And navy cabinets? My favorite color.

Auto-generated description: A modern tiny house with dark siding stands on a grassy area, accompanied by a small outdoor setup of a table and chairs.

Thinking a second tiny house — one room, big window, office space. Or maybe just a small sunroom off my bedroom. Nothing fancy. Just exploring what’s possible. Link
