Random Musings

Good morning! Just wanted to say hi! By the way, I really love this movie, Hopper. It’s such a joy to watch.

I am in awe as I watch this massive wave crash onto the land, and then a rainbow appears. It is simply beautiful to see.

TIL about that word: Ghorbat. It is a Persian term signifying the state of being a stranger, alienation, or homesickness, often describing the emotional pain of being far from home.

Ghorbat runs through Persian poetry the way longing runs through blues music, not as a subject that appears now and then but as the key in which everything is written. Centuries of invasion and exile carved the word into the language. The poetry evolved to hold the things displaced people could not take with them.

Happy Independent Bookstore Day!

I should buy from local or online independent bookstores like Bookshop.org, but I keep buying from Amazon.com. 🙄 No local bookstore in my town, but there might be one or two nearby. I haven’t checked. Hopefully, that will change.

“A town is not a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it owns a bookstore, it knows it has not fooled a soul.” — Neil Gaiman

The Planet Is Still Worth Showing Up For

Earth Day 2026 — Our Power, Our PlanetEarth Day

There’s a patch of wild grass behind my tiny house I’ve never mowed. Something always shows up there — a beetle, a moth, a spider doing its thing. So I made a quiet deal with that patch of ground: I leave it alone, it does its thing.

It’s a small thing. But on Earth Day, small things are what I think about.

Yesterday was Earth Day 2026, and the theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” I like that. Not “our crisis” — our power. That framing matters. It says the story isn’t over.

And honestly, the news backs that up more than you’d think.

The city secured $3.15M federal funding for its first All-Abilities Playground at Onion Creek Metro Park, creating an inclusive space for children of all abilities to play together. Inclusion wins! I hope more cities follow.

Though I still have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and use it occasionally, I mainly rely on my Android phone daily. I generally prefer Android over iOS, but to fully enjoy Android’s benefits, high-end phones are often the best.

I saw The Devil Wears Prada years ago, but with a sequel on the way, I was curious if it’s based on a true story. While technically fiction, it’s a thinly veiled look at Lauren Weisberger’s tenure at Vogue. Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly is the cinematic ghost of Anna Wintour—right down to the high-fashion armor.

As Streep noted regarding the character’s relentless drive:

“I wanted to take on the burden of being the one who has to make everything ‘perfect’ and the price that woman pays for that.”

Legendary satire.

For fun, I check my horoscope once in a while… I am a Virgo. Here it goes:

Virgo

  • Your Card: The Star
  • Your Word: Self-Love

You’re on top of the world this year, Virgo, and it’s time to let your light shine! You’re used to being the one in the background, doing all the hard work behind the scenes to make everyone else happy. This year, you’re ready to step into the spotlight and take care of yourself first for once. Remember that self-care is not selfish, and learning to love yourself is one of the most important lessons in life.
